Fort Langley National Historic Site: A Step Back in Time

Located in the scenic Fraser Valley, Fort Langley National Historic Site is one of British Columbia’s most iconic heritage attractions. Once a Hudson’s Bay Company fur trading post, this historic fort brings the early days of British Columbia to life through interactive exhibits, live demonstrations, and engaging events throughout the year. Ideal for families and history enthusiasts, the site offers a rich educational experience in a picturesque setting.

As a special promotion during December, the fort often puts together an event called Humbug Holidays. At the event there is a Chief trader on the lookout for festive spirit looking to recruit little helpers to manage the fort. Details for the event have not yet been confirmed for 2025. Check out the fort’s events page for the latest updates.

Where is Fort Langley?

The historic site is located at 23433 Mavis Avenue in the charming Village of Fort Langley. It’s approximately 50 km east of downtown Vancouver. The place is situated between Surrey and Abbotsford, on the other side of the Fraser River from Maple Ridge, making it easily accessible from anywhere in the Lower Mainland.

What to See and Do at Fort Langley

Visitors can explore reconstructed buildings including a blacksmith shop, cooperage and historic residences. There is also an original storehouse. Throughout the year, the fort hosts demonstrations such as barrel-making, blacksmithing and fur trading displays. The site also houses museum-quality artifacts and offers opportunities to interact with staff dressed in period attire.

In the busy summer season and on special holiday weekends, expect even more activities, including historical reenactments and hands-on experiences for all ages.

For a truly immersive experience, consider booking a night in one of Fort Langley’s oTENTik units—a unique blend of tent and cabin found at a number of Parks Canada historic sites. These ready-to-go camping accommodations sleep up to six people and include beds with linens, electricity, and a private outdoor firepit. Best of all, you get the rare opportunity to sleep within the historic fort walls!

When to Visit Fort Langley

The site is open nearly year-round, closing only on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and New Year’s Day. While Fort Langley is definitely worth visiting at any time, the summer months and long weekends like May and August offer some of the most engaging experiences with extra events and activities. We highly recommend visiting the fort, especially on days with special events.
